♻️ REASON NO 3 to REUSE ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Less than 1% of single-use takeaway cups get recycled. This is because the mixture of paper and plastic that coat the inside are too difficult to separate and they end up being incinerated or thrown into landfill.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The WHITSTABLE CUP offers an easy way for anyone to enjoy drinks on the move, knowing that it can be returned and reused hundreds of times. ⠀⁣

Head to our website for our latest list of participating cafes (☝️LINK in bio). And if you are a WHITSTABLE CUP user who likes to take a snap, do share on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter and tag us - we love to see the CUP on the move! #reusenotrecycle ⠀⁣

The solution is recycle surely, you quote reuse over recycle? How long does it take for a plastic Whitstable cup to degrade if discarded. There is a simple solution use a 100% recyclable disposable cup! Dean

🗑️REASON TO REUSE NO 2⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Did you know that while 7 million cups get thrown away each day, 1/2 million don't even make it into a bin? Instead, they litter streets, countryside, and beaches... ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The public bins in Whitstable get full very quickly in the warmer months, we have all seen the mess caused by overflowing bins, so this is another great reason to choose to reuse.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
We hope the WHITSTABLE CUP can counteract a lot of litter this year, and with 9 x cafes signed up already and more to come we have lots of places to return them once you have finished your drink (& get your £1 back of course). ⠀⁣

🔄 REASON TO REUSE NO 1 ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
7 million single-use cups get thrown away every day in the UK. 7 MILLION! Every DAY. 😳 What a load of rubbish!⠀⁣
⠀⁣
We'd ideally like to see more people 'drinking in' but there's no doubt that takeaway culture has well and truly taken hold. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
So this stat is a major reason to choose to reuse. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
If you have already bought a reusable cup from Keep Cup, Chillys or similar this is brilliant news! ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
If you've yet to try (or don't want to carry one around with you) then borrowing one of our WHITSTABLE CUPs is a great option. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
You can deposit £1 and drop it back to any participating cafe for others to use. Simple, and no rubbish 🙂 ⠀⁣

It is possible to recycle coffee cups - if they are collected without contamination without a lid and without any dregs. However the vast majority (98%) get put in municipal bins and go to general waste - destined for incineration or worse landfill - where they sit and degrade emitting methane. If you use a reusable corretto cup just 3 times (available in Whitstable, Shrewsbury, Oswestry, newport, Harper Adams Catering Department ) - then the associated carbon is equal to 3 disposable cups. Every use after that means less carbon - and corretto cups are designed to be used hundreds of times.... unfortunately we can;t recycle our way out of this - we have to reduce our consumption of single use stuff.

We have an alternative a 100% fully recyclable disposable double wall cup. Drink it recycle it! Eco Cup Company

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO REUSE? 🗑♻️🌊⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The WHITSTABLE CUP scheme was developed to help combat litter, keep our beaches clean, and help reduce wasted resources in the area. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Over the next few days we will be sharing the reasons why this is necessary... ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
We'd ideally like more change to be coming from the top. But in the meantime, we can't wait and everyday actions all help. Keep an eye out for our posts over the next few days...#reuserevolution

🌿THE WHITSTABLE SCHOOL - ECO CLUB ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
We were thrilled to have The Whitstable School's Eco Club members at the launch of the WHITSTABLE CUP. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
They weren't just part of the audience either, as two of them did a brilliant speech about why they are so concerned about the environment, and why they believe in taking action to help.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The school has also bought 100 cups for use in the canteen in order to reduce the sale of water in plastic bottles.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
A big thanks to English teacher Kathryn Gee, Eco Club organiser Tom Borg & these bright young things for getting involved 👍 ⁣

🚄 OUT OF THE BUBBLE ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
The WHITSTABLE CUP is great to pop in your bag if you are off on a day visit somewhere (like this picture of our friend Clare) ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⠀
⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⠀
One of our team members went to London the other day and was met by 4 different cafes, all serving drinks in disposable cups on arrival. When you multiply that by all the cafes in London, and then the country you can start to realise the scale of the problem. ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⠀
⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⠀
You might decide you don't want a drink on the move. & that's even better. But if you have your WHITSTABLE CUP handy you can make the better choice 🙂

🇫🇷WHITSTABLE VISITORS ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
We love this photo of some French visitors who are choosing to reuse! This group had their drinks in a WHITSTABLE CUP and then returned to the cafe to claim back their deposits, a perfect example of the circular economy we wanted to create. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
“Quelle bonne idee! What a great idea. We love the cups. There are similar things happening in France. So many more people care about the environment and there are lots of things we can do to make a difference. Bonne chance!” ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
That's 5 x less single-use cups to end up in the rubbish. 👍 #ReuseRevolution

🙂 HAPPY CUP USER NO 1 ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Thanks @supershellbells for being one of our earliest customers! Here's why she is using: ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
“I love my Whitstable Cup because it’s so bright and cheery, it catches my eye as I’m running out of the house & I remember to take it with me. Also having Whitstable on it motivates me more to reuse it as it reminds me I’m doing it to help keep my hometown single-use plastic free and a nicer place to live.”⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Michelle has chosen to keep hers to reuse, but you can also return it to any participating cafe & reclaim your deposit. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Using the cup just 3 times has less of a carbon footprint than 3 disposable cups, and stops waste from single-use takeaway cups. ⠀⁣

❓SO WHO IS THE WHITSTABLE CUP FOR? ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
It's for everyone that wants to choose to reuse. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Accessibility was key for us when planning the cup scheme. This is one of the big reasons why the cup is made of strong, recyclable plastic; because it needed to be easily affordable for cafes & customers. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
This cup is for everyone:⠀⁣
⠀⁣
✅ Locals who want a drink on the move (who may have forgotten their own reusable cup, or those who don't have one.)⠀⁣
⠀⁣
✅ Visitors who want to enjoy the stunning scenery with a tea or coffee (and who maybe hadn't planned ahead for this) ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
✅Dog walkers who need a warming beverage to accompany them. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
✅ Sea swimmers who need warming up in winter months & refreshing in the warmer ones.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
✅ Anyone who wants to reduce the amount of single-use cups that get thrown away (& end up incinerated or in land-fill) in Whitstable. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
We'll be sharing some great photos over the next few days. If you would like to support the scheme even further and don't mind taking a snap of you & your WHITSTABLE CUP do post & tag us so we can share 🙂 #WhitstableCup ⠀⁣

⠀⁣
We've had great feedback on the colours of our Whitstable Cup from our cafes this week. It seems customers are loving the choice. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Why not pick your favourite? After all, you can keep it to use over and over again? Or you can always return it to any participating cafe and get another colour next time.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The key is to reuse them again and again, whatever way you choose. 3 x times already makes it a lower carbon impact than a (paper) disposable cup & the more you reuse the more that improves. #CircularEconomy ⠀⁣

🌾 FARM & HARPER ⠀⁣

Farm & Harper have been committed to reducing waste and sustainability since opening in 2017. They came up with their brilliant Wake Cup Whitstable scheme (where customers could borrow a mug purchased from local charity shops) to take-away and be rewarded with a loyalty stamp too. ⠀⁣

Here's why they got involved in their own words: ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
"Bravo Plastic Free Whitstable! F&H set up a similar scheme - Wake Cup Whitstable - in early 2018 so we remain huge advocates of removing disposable cups from our lovely town. Given the goal of a sustainable, planet-friendly initiative, we are thrilled to see the scheme being realised & delighted to have been invited to take part. 🍰 CAFE REVIVAL @ THE HORSEBRIDGE⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
Cafe Revival at the Horsebridge have been involved in the idea for a reusable cup scheme for the town right from the beginning. After talking to the Umbrella cafe about collaborating on a scheme, the idea was developed further after meeting Plastic Free Whitstable volunteer Nicole at a PFW event.⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
They also win the prize of the first cafe to take a lovely photo of an early Whitstable Cup customer! (See pics). Nice work guys.. ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
Here's a few words from Cafe Revival about the Whitstable Cup: ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
" We at Revival are proud to have helped develop the scheme and we really think it has the potential to inspire other cafes in our High street and across Kent to do the same. ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
The pilot scheme helped troubleshoot lots of potential bumps in the road and got our brains in gear to work collaboratively to solve any problems. This has, we believe, resulted in a really simple idea that is easy to incorporate into the day to day running of cafes and therefore has much more chance of sustainability and success. ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
We are so confident in the efficacy of the scheme that we have also decided, after discussion with the Umbrella café to phase out our single-use takeaway cups for hot drinks and convert entirely to The Whitstable Cup. It is an exciting start to 2020 and great to finally see the Whitstable Cup in all its bright glory on our shelves 😊"⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣
If you are taking one of Revival's delicious cakes and a cuppa to the beach, enjoy it in a Whitstable Cup!

☂️ THE UMBRELLA CAFE ⠀⁣

The Umbrella Café has the good of the community at the heart of everything they do. & they have been instrumental in developing the Whitstable Cup scheme. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Here's why they are involved in their own words: ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
"Trying to close the loop on a throw-away culture has always been a priority for us. It makes business sense too; why buy more and more packaging when you can reuse something?⠀⁣
⠀⁣
SME’s have the advantage we can implement change quickly and we can encourage customers to travel the ‘reusable’ journey together. Corporate larger businesses don’t have that flexibility and can look slow in their approach to the mindset of their customer base. So there was never any doubt about us joining the Whitstable Cup scheme!"⠀⁣

🤔WHY PLASTIC? ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
We know that some may wonder why Plastic Free Whitstable have launched a plastic cup, so we wanted to let you know why we felt it was the right choice. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The idea behind the WHITSTABLE CUP is that it's reusable and easily accessible to all. Plastic is a major problem when single-use. But compared to other choices of take-away cup, a plastic reusable actually has a LOWER carbon footprint than using lots of bio-degradable or compostable cups. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Here's some info from our research:- ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
♻️Our cup is made from 100% polypropylene, which is fully recyclable. It is intended to be used hundreds of times and is designed and made in the U.K.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
♻️Compostable cups, although made from plant material, are still single-use: used once & thrown away creating waste which has to be dealt with. They do not just 'rot down' – they need to be sent to a specialised in-vessel composting facility. Cups thrown away in our town bins end up in the incinerator along with other rubbish. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
♻️Biodegradable packaging is usually plastic, with a chemical additive which just means it will break down less slowly eg 3 years rather than 500!⠀⁣
⠀⁣
♻️Compostable and biodegradable packaging can not be recycled which confuses customers trying to dispose of them responsibly.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
♻️Carbon footprint stats - If you choose a reusable cup 7 times (instead of 7 takeaway cups) – you will use 41% less carbon. If you use one every day for 6 months instead of 182 single-use cups – then you save 95% of the carbon.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
♻️After 100's of uses, the cup can be recycled through your household collection. Polypropylene can be recycled into brooms, bins, pallets, ice scrapers, and bicycle racks!⠀⁣
⠀⁣
We hope that helps, but do contact us with any questions - & you can find out more via our website too:- www.whitstablecup.org.uk

I think this is a great initiative. Want the same style system on my campus. Wondering though; I can understand why not glass, but why not metal? Would that be too cost prohibitive?

I should be really happy about this movement but I am sincerity sadden by this approach. There are plenty of options and the most easiest way to reduce, recycle and reuse is ask the local residents to donate their unwanted odd mugs and cups. Not only this, drinking from a plastic cup changes the taste of the coffee and tea and it was not very nice at all (or is it me being very particular) If I forget to bring my reuse glass cup, ask the shop to borrow a ceramic mug .. otherwise I will not buy one at all. I am super sorry just a bit too passionate where I feel we are only tackling one part of the issues as be need to be much, much more forward thinking .. In the end these cups either be lost, it will deteriorate in a year or two (Prime example picnic plastic cups). Also I like to point out the logo is printed with oil based inks (which is also harmful to the planet). How about how we tackle not just plastic cups but the takeaway boxes are now in place of cardboard surely we should bring our own plates and knives and forks or borrow it? Or plastic bags in place or paperbags (What will happen to our trees? surely we should encourage to bring our own or borrow a bag and return scheme locally). We are producing so much other alternatives which is warming the sea and our climate. And how about stop using harmful chemicals i.e. bleach for our water systems? I may not know much, my small knowledge as a designer maker, volunteer for Greenpeace and being gorilla gardener. If I was given an opportunity I would of done things so much, much more differently. Apologies to all, I truly believe we can not be just one step ahead, It needs to be more than 100 times ahead or more. Thinking of our future. 🌱🌳💚

So, our reusable cup scheme is out in the world! This week we're showing you the places where you can get one or return one, and hearing from some of our first wave of cafes & restaurants. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Following our launch last week we've had another 10 x businesses contact us about getting involved, which is fantastic! So, our list will be growing quickly but right now you can take part and get a Whitstable Cup at:⠀⁣
⠀⁣
♻️ The Umbrella Cafe
♻️Whitstable Produce
♻️Farm And Harper
♻️Cafe Revival at the Horsebridge ⠀⁣

If you are grabbing your beverage to go, try it in the Whitstable Cup and be happy in the knowledge you are saving yet another takeaway cup from the bin. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
If you use it this week do take a photo of where you take it & share it with us!

👋 HELLO FROM NICOLE ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The WHITSTABLE CUP was researched and brought into being by the Umbrella Cafe and Plastic Free Whitstable, with funding from Canterbury City Council. PFW volunteer Nicole has been leading on the project and was inspired by the many residents and businesses in Whitstable who want to make a difference and reduce their single-use products. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
As you can see, she's pretty happy it's launched and is out in the world! ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
We'll hear more from Nicole soon but we just wanted to leave you with these words for now:⠀⁣
⠀⁣
" Many of us are very concerned about waste, plastic and climate change and it can seem overwhelming at times. People ask is something like this (a reusable cup) too little too late? I myself have to hope that small things we do WILL make a difference. We need government and corporations to take action as well, but we can't wait for them to do it! This is one example of the many things individuals can do right now."⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Look out for the Whitstable Cup today at The Umbrella Café Grain and Hearth Bakery Farm & Harper , Café Revival at the Horsebridge & Whitstable Produce Store. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Happy Saturday everyone! #Whitstable Cup⠀⁣
